NFL Playoffs: Divisional Round

The single Lazy Line pick pushed last week, with the Colts tying the spread when defeating the Chiefs. That brings the yearly total (since posting online in Week 13) to 6-7-1, with 10 units of wins and 11 units of losses. Only one pick this week too.

49ers at Panthers pick ’em
Lazy Line: Panthers -4. Panthers a 2-unit play
Comments: Home teams perform well in this round, and this game offers the only thing close to a home underdog. The Panthers beat the 49ers in this venue earlier this year 10-9 and have probably improved since then. Coach Rivera abandoned his passive Cover-2 defense midyear and now has an overachieving secondary. The much-maligned group of replacements in that group shows lots of hustle and smarts and no longer can be considered the weak link in the defense.

That’s bad news for SF QB Kaepernick, who completed just 16 of 30 against a much weaker Green Bay squad. He’ll be under greater pressure this week from the Panthers’ front seven. I don’t see much changing from the earlier meeting, except maybe the Panthers scoring a few more points than last time.
